“Avengers: Endgame,” the Disney and Marvel juggernaut film, made mathematical history this past Monday when the total box office receipts finally overtook the U.S. Gross Domestic Product to become number one on the list of all-time biggest numbers anyone has ever seen.
“A huge congratulations to the Marvel Studios and Walt Disney Studios teams, and thank you to the fans around the world who lifted ‘Avengers: Endgame’ to these historic heights,” Alan Horn, co-chairman and chief creative officer of The Walt Disney Studios, said in a statement.
More Digits Than The Number Pi
To get to the top spot, “Endgame” outstripped some of the biggest numbers in history including the box office gross for “Avatar”, number of times LOL has been used in a text message, and the total number of internet cat videos.
“This is one astronomically large fucking number,” said Bill Westbert, Chief Mathematician of Googology at Bransford University, who has calculated that the box office total in 2025 will have passed 100,000 nanijillions. “It’s easily the biggest number I’ve ever seen in my 42 years of studying numbers.”
“It’s huge ass,” he added.
No End In Sight
The superhero film, which had the Avengers take on the villainous Thanos, made $1.2 billion at the worldwide box office for its global opening. It took just five days for the film to cross $1 billion at the box office and is expected to continue to climb as the film franchise begins the next series, dubbed “Phase Four”.
Although scientists are unsure of how large the number will ultimately become, special computers are ready to track its progress as its popularity feeds off the next installment. “Spider-Man: Far From Home,” is set to debut next year.
May God have mercy on our souls.
