Starting with a misunderstanding over a banana truck years ago while filming the 1962 movie “King Kong vs Godzilla”, and escalating thru the years during assorted press interviews and perceived slights, a beef between Godzilla and King Kong was on full display in a film the two made this year say producers.
“Normally these two are very professional – they come to set, they do their job, and go home,” said a producer on the movie who asked that his name be withheld for fear of reprisals. “They know a lot of people are counting on them to make a good film. But sometimes the goldfish bowl becomes too much – and personal lives just rupture into the professional sphere.”
“It’s embarrassing for everyone involved,” he said. “There is a lot of work to be done, and you’ve got two performers who for whatever reason are tied up in the past, and it just gets ugly.”
Needed To Be Separated
After filming began in Hawaii and Australia in late 2018, the production was moved to Hong Kong to accommodate a request from one of the title characters to be near home on the weekends, which caused more friction on set.
“We had to relocate our shoot to appease one of the stars, which caused some inconvenience for the other, and he went nuts,” recounted the producer. “You’d have thought we asked him to finish shooting on Mars – which by the way, we could have done, contractually.”
“At one point, they had to be physically separated,” said a caterer. “It was just screaming and punching and kicking. You feel bad for the younger actors who have to see this. These are performers they had probably looked up to their whole lives – behaving like children.”
Long Hours Make For Difficult Moments
“It does make you rethink what you’re doing,” said the producer. “Is this what I went to film school for? Putting in the long hours? Being away from my family?” He paused looking at some promotional posters for the film showing the two monsters fighting.
“At the end of the day we had a movie to show for it. So, I guess it was worth it,” he said. “But when you’re lying in bed trying to forget all the ugliness, you do think to yourself – I mean, I guess we all got paid – but at what cost?”
“Godzilla vs. Kong” will be released in theaters March 24, 2021.
